Muscovy Duck

Habitat –
Muscovy ducks are commonly found near ponds, lakes, rivers, and wetlands. In Florida—especially around neighborhoods, parks, and canals—they often choose quiet, shaded areas with plenty of water and vegetation. They perch in trees more than most other duck species and can adapt easily to both wild and suburban environments.

Diet –
These ducks are natural foragers. They eat grasses, aquatic plants, insects, small fish, tadpoles, and even leftover food scraps found in neighborhoods. They also enjoy seeds, grains, and fruits. Their varied diet helps keep local insect populations in check.

Lifespan –
In the wild, Muscovy ducks typically live 8–12 years, depending on predators and food availability. In safer environments—like parks or farms—they can live up to 15 years or more.

Special behavior –
Muscovy ducks are quiet compared to other ducks and don’t quack—instead, they make low hisses and soft coos. They are excellent fliers for their size and can roost in trees. They’re also very social and often travel in family groups. One unique feature is the red, bumpy skin (caruncles) around their beak, which becomes more pronounced as they age.
