The Red-bellied Woodpecker lives in forests, wooded neighborhoods, parks, and backyards throughout Florida. They love trees and are often seen climbing up and down tree trunks.
They eat insects, beetles, ants, spiders, nuts, seeds, and berries. They will also visit backyard bird feeders for peanuts and suet.
They can live about 10–12 years in the wild.
Even though it’s called “red-bellied,” the red on its belly is hard to see! The bright red is actually on its head. They use their strong beaks to drill into trees to find insects. Their long sticky tongue helps pull bugs out of holes.
