The Pileated Woodpecker lives in large forests, wooded swamps, and mature neighborhoods with tall trees throughout Florida. They prefer areas with big trees because they need space to excavate large nest cavities.
Their favorite food is carpenter ants. They also eat other insects, larvae, beetles, and sometimes wild fruits and nuts.
Pileated Woodpeckers can live about 12–13 years in the wild.
This is the largest woodpecker in Florida. It has a bright red crest on its head and a loud, ringing call. When searching for insects, it chisels out large rectangular holes in trees. If you see a big chunk of bark torn away, a Pileated Woodpecker was likely there!
