Ospreys are found throughout Florida near lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and estuaries. They often build large nests on tall trees, utility poles, channel markers, and specially built nesting platforms. Florida’s abundant waterways make it an ideal home for them year-round.
Ospreys eat almost exclusively fish. They hunt by hovering high above the water and then diving feet-first to grab fish with their sharp talons. Common prey includes mullet, catfish, and other medium-sized fish.
In the wild, ospreys typically live 7–10 years, though some have lived over 20 years. Their survival depends on food availability and safe nesting areas.
Ospreys are famous for their dramatic fishing dives. They are among the few birds with reversible outer toes, which allow them to grip slippery fish securely. After catching a fish, they turn it head-first in flight to reduce wind resistance. Ospreys are often called “fish hawks” because of their expert fishing skills.
